New and Notable Manga From 11/18-11/25

by

1. Shuumatsu no Laughter

Author:   Tanabe Yellow
Artist:     Tanabe Yellow
Genre(s): ActionAdventureComedyDramaFantasyShounen,Supernatural

A girl named Haru and her big brother suddenly appear in town. Her brother, being an akuma, is shunned by the people. But, he gets them to bring him to the chief of the town where he offers to bury the akuma – Godot – who has been living in the town for five years. Can this “akuma eater” accomplish this task?” - Shoujo-Sense

Thoughts: I expect a lot from this manga as it is written by Tanabe Yellow, the same mangaka who made Kekkaishi. For having no action in the first chapter, it comes off as very fast-paced and we can expect a lot of action in the future. I also enjoyed the humor.

Disclaimer: The manga mentioned in this post have been posted on a manga hosting website within the mentioned time frame. These manga may not have been written recently, some are many years old and are only now being posted. Some have been posted on previous websites other than the ones mentioned in this post. Furthermore, some manga mentioned are one-shots and thus are likely not to be continued. Manga mentioned here have been picked from a limited number of websites and are chosen based on my opinion. The following is not a complete list of all new and notable manga released within the time frame mentioned in the title. The term “manga” is used loosely to also include both manhwa, manhua, and web comics.

2. Owari no Serafu

Author:    KAGAMI Takaya
Artist:     YAMAMOTO Yamato
Genre(s): Drama  Mystery  Shounen

One day a virus appeared on Earth. This mysterious virus kills every infected human over the age of 13. At the same time, vampires emerged from the bowels of the world and enslaved mankind.

Enter Hyakuya Yuuichirou. He and the rest of the children from his orphanage are treated as livestock by the vampires. Even in captivity, Yuuichirou dreams big. He dreams of killing vampires. He dreams of killing all of them.

Thoughts: Another manga that I have high expectations for. This chapter does an amazing job of building the setting and playing with my emotions. I am very excited for the next chapter.

3. Bamora!

Author:     OSADA Yoshimi
Artist:       OSADA Yoshimi
Genre(s):   Comedy  Romance  School Life  Seinen  Sports

At school, Kamazaki feels as though there is a circle drawn around her, a line that no one will cross. A part of it is because her face looks mean, and another part of it is because she’s rather socially awkward, but the largest part of it all is that she has earned a reputation for being really bad-tempered and violent to the people around her.

This all changes in her second year of high school. The cute, friendly, and popular Kume Asami one day inexplicably crosses that invisible line and decides to be her friend. Kume introduces “Kama-chan” to friendship and to the 5-man soccer club that meets on the school roof. As Kama cautiously enters Kume’s club, she may find herself able to grow past the bad expectations people have of her, and enter into a new, happier, high-school life.” -MangaHelpers

Thoughts: I had a hard time getting through some pages, but I am a sucker for Kamazaki’s character.  I love those mean looking softies.

4. Inferno

Author:    Rino Miki
Artist:     Rino Miki
Genre(s):  Josei Mystery Supernatural

After causing the death of his parents, a young boy lives solely for the sake of his sister – avoiding contact with other people for fear of hurting them like he did his family. But one day, a mysterious stranger appears and says ‘I will control your life from today onwards’…” -Batoto.net

Thoughts: Has potential and is unique so far. I do worry that this will turn into some generic slave/master shtick. Interesting to note is that apparently the slave in this potential relationship was the master’s master in his previous life (or so was implied).

5. Akuma Ga Kitarite

Author:   SHIIBA Nana
Artist:     SHIIBA Nana
Genre(s):  Comedy  Romance  Shoujo

Ruiji is secretly in love with Wakatsuki. But how can he declare his love when this one is frightened to death every time she meets his eyes?” -Mangaupdates.com

Thoughts: I swelled up with warm fuzzy feelings. Like I said before, I love those mean-looking softies.

6. Hungry Joker

Author:   Tabata Yuuki
Artist:     Tabata Yuuki
Genre(s):  Action  Comedy  Mystery  Shounen  Supernatural

In the 2100s, a new virus has arisen that has dramatically evolved the wildlife into deadly monsters. Humans have been left behind by the virus’s explosive evolution, and they are facing extinction. The only protection humanity has is the government’s battle scientist organization, known as the White Jokers.

Alice and her little sister Mona live in an isolated island city, where they have no hope of either running away or being rescued by the far-off government’s White Jokers. Alice is determined to protect her little sister, but she and her handguns may stand no chance against a major attack. One day, a strange boy in a white lab coat, with a mysterious timer floating over his head, appears. Is he a White Joker, and will he be able to protect their little city?

Winner of 2011 Golden Future Cup.” -Mangaupdates.com

Thoughts: Meh, this series is pretty generic so far. I like the one-shot better than the actual series. I put this on the list because three chapters were released in the past week alone.

——

7. Hoozuki no Reitetsu

Author:   Eguchi Natsumi
Artist:     Eguchi Natsumi
Genre(s):  Comedy Fantasy Seinen Supernatural

Hoozuki is a deputy of Yama, king of hell and judge of the afterlife and a super “S”. This is a daily life of Hoozuki and his people.

Nominated for the Taishô Manga Awards 2012.” -Batoto.net

Thoughts: Not bad for a first chapter. What really gets me going is that this series has seven volumes released so far. Although the first chapter was good, not great, the thought of being able to read so much manga makes me drool.
