Manga Review: Shokugeki no Soma – 3
Even “God’s Tongue” fell for Souma’s delicious cooking.
A fun practice when reading new manga is to have in the back of one’s mind ideas for where the plot would go and or what the writer is willing to do to make their manga stand out. One of the good aspects of this manga is that the writer and artists seem to be ensuring that their series is different from the other manga running in Weekly Shounen Jump. Consider how we still get these sensual visual set pieces, whether they be people or food each chapter. Which other series in the manga does that? Toriko comes close, however not to this detail as often in that it seems to be more for comedy while this seems to attempt to accurately convey to us how we may even feel, perhaps feelings that we would be afraid to admit.
Consider eating something so good that it feels as if you are being caressed by angels and, even worse, reacting to them. Ultimately, this seems to stand as proof of how good Souma’s cooking is, or so we thought. He seems to have a mastery of combining interesting ingredients together to yield new tastes that even one who has been served dishes from around the world hadn’t experienced. His skills are amazing and his dishes consistently look tasty.
The plot took an interesting direction. It seemed to build us up to the belief that he would surprise Erina extensively, enough to be the sole person to pass, but then all of a sudden at the end, she says it didn’t taste good and doesn’t pass him. Can he really not be a part of the academy now all because she didn’t want to give in? The last panel at least seemed to imply that perhaps she isn’t done with him.
All in all, three chapters in, Shokugeki no Soma seems to be one of the more interesting manga in Weekly Shounen Jump offered all year and one that we hope will stay with us. It is a bit difficult at this time to see which direction the plot will go. At one point, I thought it would become a school life cooking type manga with him definitely earning entry into the school but with this chapter, that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. Will he have to spend sometime training?
