Fan Favorite ’13 – First Round: Captain Marvel vs. Hellboy vs. Daredevil
To kick off the 2nd half of the First Round, today’s match-up features a super, all-comic showdown!
Despite being the only female superhero in the tournament (and the only non-horned contestant in this match), Captain Marvel has a plethora of powers to match and get past any man (and woman, of course). Don’t let the cat-loving stuff fool you, because Hellboy has a mean streak that’s unrivaled, and opponents will experience first-hand what true hell feels like. And finally, Daredevil may not be as strong as the first two, but his superhuman senses and hand-to-hand prowess is more than enough to compensate, and if underestimated, no one’s going to see what hit them.
Which of these heroes will be the first to represent the comic world in the Sweet 16? Help decide by voting after the break!
Captain Marvel (Captain Marvel)
Having finally decided to ditch her Ms. Marvel persona and take the mantle of her predecessor Mar-Vell, Carol Danvers has taken her place as a first string Avenger once again and stepped back into centee stage with her own (excellent) solo series.
After battling alcoholism, fears of inadequacy, and split personality disorders over the years, Carol now has two feet planted (figuratively) on the ground, and the world is now literally her oyster. She has recently come into her own as a character even moreso than before, and is exposed to even more readers than usual by starring not only in her own series, but also Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers and Kelly Sue DeConnick’s Avengers Assemble. -Chris
He’s a demon, he’s got a huge arm, he loves pancakes, and now he’s stuck in hell in an Inferno-esque tale of awesomeness. Yeah, Mike Mignola’s signature comic creation is just as awesome as he’s always been and he’s ready to kick some serious monster ass, as well as the asses of any of these other Fan Favorite chumps. -Ryley
I picked ‘ol Hornhead as one of my picks for Fan Favorite last year, only to see him narrowly edged out in the “Sweet 16” stage by Lisbeth Salander. A year later, however, I’m determined for Matt to go all the way!
I have already written at length over just why the Daredevil comic is just utterly fantastic (for the Best Comic of 2012 feature), but I’m going to take this opportunity to remind you all again of why the Man Without Fear is awesome! Indeed, the past year has seen Mark Waid put Matt Murdock through some real hard times, with his senses being stolen when he was taken hostage by Latveria, the Coyote’s sinister attacks on Matt along with the criminal underworld, and of course, with the recent revelations regarding Foggy’s health.
But you know what? Despite all this, Matt Murdock has remained fun, refusing to retreat to his brooding days of depression which saw him fall into new lows during “Shadowland.” Whether or not this is a new outlook on life, or some form of denial, there’s no denying that at the moment Daredevil is being whole kinds of awesome. I just hope that things finally work out for him. -Sam
