Ang Lee Wishes He’d Have Done A Fun Hulk

Whilst Ang Lee’s 2003 Hulk had a lot of things in its favor, it was often lamented for its lack of “Hulk Smash!” It was a great character piece in terms of Bruce Banner, but there was a distinct lack of action. More importantly, when the action did come, it was Hulk vs. a few rabid pooches.

Lee was recently talking to Vulture about his upcoming Life of Pi, when the topic of Hulk was brought up. Lee was asked, “How did doing Hulk prepare you for this? And what did you think of Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk in The Avengers?”

His response after the break.

Lee responded with:

“I learned quite a bit about CG from The Hulk, and I wouldn’t have been able to do Life of Pi without that. But it’s easier to create an animal, because there exists a good reference –- so a tiger or a hyena is easier than a 2,000-pound rage monster. The hardest thing to do is the weight, not the skin, because there’s no reference for something that size that is agile. And the technology’s improved, so you can have more details with Mark’s Hulk. My problem is that I took the whole thing too seriously. I should have had more fun with it, instead of all the psychodrama!”

Whilst Lee’s Hulk grossed an impressive $245 million at the global box office, the film was still viewed as a commercial underachiever. The one negative that is always thrown at the film is the serious tone it decided to take, with Lee telling an emotional tale rather than an action-packed one. Mark Ruffalo’s recent portrayal of Hulk in The Avengers is seen as the perfect way to handle the character, although it’s often easier to focus on a character’s stronger points when involved in an ensemble piece.
